Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz has unloaded on team management
with scathing criticism of how they have handled his contract status.
Ortiz, the only Red Sox to be named to this year's All-Star team, said
the team's rejection of his request for a two-year contract in the
offseason was "humiliating" and "embarrassing."
In an extensive Spanish-language interview with Jorge Ortiz of USA Today,
Ortiz was critical of the team's decision to offer long-term deals to other
players, but not him.
Ortiz said that he'd like to stay in Boston, but not if he was treated the
way he was last offseason.
"If you go crazy and give contracts to whoever comes along despite not
knowing how they're going to do, then you don't give me my due consideration,
even though I do my thing every year, (expletive) that," said Ortiz.
Ortiz seemed to be referring to the rich multi-year contracts given Carl
Crawford and John Lackey, both of whom are sidelined with injuries and not
playing this year.
The Red Sox and Ortiz agreed to a one-year, $14.575 million contract for 2012,
a $2.025 million raise from the prior season. "David is having a terrific
season and has been a leader on and off the field for us. We remain hopeful
that David will finish his career with the Red Sox," General Manager Ben
Cherrington said in an email to USA Today. However, Cherington said the
Red Sox would not look to start negotiations on a contract extension
during the season.
