Seager fractures hand on HBP, will go on IL


LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers have overcome an avalanche of injuries so far

this season, but now theyre going to have to be without Corey Seager

for an extended period of time, as X-rays showed the star shortstop

suffered a fractured right hand in Saturdays 7-0 win against the Marlins.


The Dodgers didnt give a timetable for Seagers return, but itll


certainly be an extended absence following the diagnosis.



I think that were all concerned about him and the extent of the injury,


said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. Obviously, you dont want to lose

any player for an extended period of time.



In the fifth inning, Seager was hit in the right hand by left-hander

Ross Detwiler. Seager immediately grimaced in pain and was taken

out of the game after a quick conversation with Roberts and the


training staff. Gavin Lux moved from second base to shortstop

to replace Seager, with Sheldon Neuse entering the game to play second.



After the game, Roberts said Seager was in some pain and

the hand had already swelled up. It didnt take long for additional

results to reveal that it was a severe injury.



Like most of L.A.'s hitters, the 2020 National League

Championship Series and World Series MVP was in an extended

slump over the last few weeks, but had started to break out of it

and perform like the Dodgers were accustomed to seeing.



Seager has been a huge part of the Dodgers success and as

the teams No. 2 hitter all season. Hes hitting .362 with four homers

this season, but had hit .375 (9-for-24) with four RBIs in his

last six games.



The Dodgers already lost Edwin Rios for the remainder of the

season with a shoulder injury and AJ Pollock was placed on

the 10-day injured list on Saturday with a left hamstring

strain. Cody Bellinger and Zach McKinstry have also been


on the shelf for over a month. Los Angeles did acquire

infielder/outfielder Yoshi Tsutsugo from the Rays and has

reportedly agreed to terms with future Hall of Famer Albert

Pujols, though that deal has not yet been confirmed

by the team.



In Seagers absence, the Dodgers will rely on Chris Taylor

and Lux at shortstop. Neuse could also get more playing

time at second base, filling in for Lux. Neither Tsutsugo

or Pujols will be activated before Sundays game, so the

Dodgers will have to lean on someone from their Minor League

system to fill Seagers spot on the roster.
