Meanwhile, in the women's 57 kg class, Taiwan's Su Li-wen, who had suffered
from an injury to her left knee since the preliminary round of 16 earlier in
the day, was defeated by Croatia's Martina Zubcic 4-5 in the bronze medal
match.

Su tied with Zubcic 4-4 after the first three rounds, but lost a decisive
point in the fourth.

During the match, Su managed to continue fighting after falling several times
in obvious pain, as she had in previous competitions.

Her perseverance earned her rounds of applause and cheers from the audience
in Beijing, as well as from members of the press from various countries.

The 27-year-old Su, who won gold medals at the 2006 Asian Games in Doha, the
2007 World University Games in Bangkok and the 2008 Asian Taekwondo
Championship, was taken to hospital soon after her defeat.

Prior to the competition, Su was described by the U.S.-based Sports
Illustrated kas the only Taiwanese athlete capable of winning a gold for
the country. It was her first Olympics.

Her defeat came after she beat Robin Cheong of New Zealand 1-0 in an earlier
match, but lost the round of 16 to Lim Su-jeong of South Korea 0-1.
