Carlos Rodriguez: ''Justine's going to get better''
By By Georges Homsi
Friday, June 2, 2006

Carlos Rodriguez has been coaching Justine Henin-Hardenne for 10 years now,
and while he remains confident that she can retain her title, he knows that
she is going to have to step up her game, particularly with Italy's Tathiana
Garbin - the last person to beat her at Roland Garros - lying in wait for her
in the third round.

How do you think Justine is playing at the moment?

She's alternating between some very good play and some passages where's she's
not been so good, for example against Yakimova in the second round. The
conditions were hardly ideal, however, and the main thing is that she showed
some fighting spirit. She'll have a chance to show what she's made of later
in the tournament.

Last year, she came to Roland Garros unbeaten on clay, whereas this year, she
lost to Schnyder in Charleston, and at the final in Berlin to Petrova. Do you
think that this might have an effect on her play here?

I don't think so. On the women's circuit at the moment, you can't expect to
win every game. It makes for an interesting challenge for Justine. She's made
it through to a quarterfinal and a final so far this year, so if she gets
through to the last four here, then that will be quite an achievement, as
it's by no means easy.

In the semifinal in Berlin, Justine played incredibly well to beat Amelie
Mauresmo. Even though she lost the final, her performance in the semi must
have been very encouraging for you.

I still think that she lacks a little consistency at the highest level. She
has only played in 18 tournaments in the last two years, and has been off the
circuit for long periods. Since 2003, the longest run she's ever been on is
seven tournaments without getting injured. She needs to play as much as
possible to build up her mental strength. She doesn't necessarily have to
play outstanding tennis every time she goes out on court - that would be
impossible. She needs to be able to play at a certain level day in, day out,
and keep the bad days to a minimum.

A lot of people think that Justine is favorite to retain her title. What do
you think?

It's difficult to pick out a favorite at the moment. There are five or six
ladies who can make it to the quarter or the semis, and they're the ones who
get to that stage at virtually every tournament. Any of those girls could win
here - they've won Grand Slams before, and they'll surely win some more.
Justine is part of that group, no better, no worse…
