Manchester City are confident that the Arsenal left-back Gaël Clichy will
become their first signing of the summer, but they have distanced themselves
from reports that they are also trying to persuade Arsenal into a £20m deal
for Samir Nasri.
The two clubs have agreed a £7m fee for Clichy and the player is expected to
arrive in Manchester early next week. But there have been no high-level talks
about Nasri's potential availability and none are planned.
Nasri, who has been prominently linked with a move to Manchester United, has
one year left on his contract and City are monitoring him as a possible
back-up option for later in the summer. However, their interest has never
gone beyond that point and City are bemused by reports they have been closing
in on a deal with the player's agent and club.
City will be relieved to conclude the deal for Clichy, who was the subject of
a £5m bid from Liverpool last week, after a difficult start to their summer
transfer business that saw them concede defeat to Barcelona in the signing of
Udinese's Chile forward Alexis Sánchez.
Shaun Wright-Phillips, who is no longer wanted by City, is attracting
interest from Wigan and Bolton, though any move may depend on him accepting a
reduction from his current £60,000-a-week salary.
