Brian Cashman: No rush on Chien-Ming Wang's return to Yankees

Joe Girardi recently expressed hope that Chien-Ming Wang's start Tuesday
night for Triple-A Scranton could be his final step before returning to
the Yankees, but GM Brian Cashman isn't nearly that optimistic.

Wang has been pitching in extended spring games in Tampa while strengthening
his ailing hips through physical therapy, leading Cashman to believe it will
take more than one start in the minors for Wang to prove he's ready to rejoin
the Yankees. "I wouldn't think that he would be ready after one outing," said
Cashman, who will make the trip to Scranton tonight. "We'll see what we see.
I wouldn't be surprised if he needed more."

Cashman said the reports out of Tampa have been positive, though Wang has
been limited to side sessions and extended spring matchups against low-level
players who like to hack away, rendering any stats mostly meaningless.
"Low pitch counts against the extended spring program, it's hard to judge
that," Cashman said. "We could use him back in the rotation being the Wang
of old. Everybody can use a perennial 19-game winner who can give you 200
innings."
