Australian Open 2008 - What A Feeling!
14/01/2008:
Justine advanced to the second round on opening day at the Australian Open
after defeating punchy Aiko Nakamura of Japan 6-2 6-2 in 1 hour and 28
minutes. The new tournament court colors made for a blue Monday as hot sunny
Aussie summer temperatures, breezes, and a gritty opponent gave the world #1
a bigger fight than the scoreline represented. The regal Belgian will play
Russian Olga Poutchkova in the next round on Wednesday.
"Always the first round is not my favourite one, so I'm glad it's behind me
now. It was tough at the beginning because the conditions were quite
difficult. A little bit windy and she had a game that wasn't the easiest for
me to start the tournament. She was hitting the ball pretty flat, and that
wasn't easy. She played a really good match and was really aggressive and I
really needed a little bit of time to get used to the conditions and the
rhythm. It's a great feeling to be back in Melbourne" - Justine
It was Justine's first match on Rod Laver Arena in two years, and even the
best champions have a their opening day nerves of excitement. Aiko Nakamura
(Wta #73) bothered Justine with her counter attacking exuberant two-handed on
both wings baseline game. Double faults were gifted to the Japanese player,
but she never did manage to earn the crucial break points after many deuces
could've changed the pre-ordained storyline. Justine won the first set 6-2 in
39 minutes.
The tension eased and so did Justine as she let the second set go down 0-2.
Nakamura was on the verge of a dream 0-3 lead. But Henin awoke from her nap,
and won the next six games in a row. Justine's serve and volley forays didn't
give much groundstrokes to the Japanese counter puncher.
Final Score 6-2 6-2 in 1 hour and 28 minutes
