Andre Agassi - July 26

(partial transcript)

Q. Andre, in the end, it seemed like such a nice appreciative moment
between you and the crowd. You seemed to appreciate the situation,
the match very much, and they seemed to appreciate you, how did that
feel?

A. It's pretty special out there. It's a great atmosphere. I tell you
it feels like you're playing in the finals in the first round and that's
a testament to the quality of the stadium and the intimacy of it and
the excitement of the crowd and the enthusiasm and, you know, I just
received so much support out there and at the end needed it and it felt
good.

Q. How is the hip holding up and any fitness concerns?

A. Well, LA was great for me. I had three matches and I held up strong
and played well all three matches and my practice has been good here.
Obviously, missing Indy was the call that I felt like I needed to
make for the sake of not just putting too much back to back on it.
But it felt good tonight. I was moving well and, you know, I'm trusting
my legs out there which is a good feeling again.

Q. Did the loss in LA make you more eager tonight to make a difference,
to show a difference?

A. Well, it's my belief after months of relatively no matches, to get
your momentum going like I did in LA, I only believed I was going to
get better. So, I was certainly hoping that coming here was going to
be another step forward and it's just you're hanging by a thread out
there. These matches are decided by a few points here or there and
you feel like you're, like you're close to disappointment out there,
and then, you know, when you get over that hump, you know, you start
to feel that confidence and it's a good thing.

Q. The moment in the break in the third set Andre, I'm over here.
The break in the third set at 4/4, it just seemed that maybe just
experience but that seemed obviously, that was the moment of the
match but tell me about the effect and impact of experience at that
moment because it just seemed that you were there and he wasn't quite?

A. You know, well, I return a good first serve the first point and
then the second I got a look. I hit the ball back up the line straight
away and, I mean, I immediately came in on a short ball. Actually,
it was a forehand at the line. I came in and closed up the volley and
I just was aggressive and I took my chance and I happen to come up with
it, and the next point I did the same thing, two backhands up the line,
back- to- back and straight in and got him to make an error. And then
15-30 point I just played the solid point where he shaked a forehand
and, you know, the game unfortunately ended with a double fault.
But I felt like I stepped up that game and put myself in a good
position to close it up.

Q. 6-4 in the third against an awful nice player would seem like
a pretty high quality match. Have you felt better walking off the
court this year?

A. These matches all feel pretty good to win. I mean, I consider
Tommy certainly one of the best players out there. So, his ball striking
and the weapons he has and his court sense all that makes it for
a tough day. I mean, you can't expect to go out there and get lucky
and win easy. You know you've got to play quality match from start
to finish and so that feels pretty good.

Q. Do you feel you kind of needed a win like this?

A. I always feel like I need them. Like, I was saying earlier, it just
feels like when you go so long without the matches, they become more
important.

Q. You mentioned the break in the third set somebody yelled during
his toss on the second serve and you gave a long look up into the
audience. Is that something though you have to be ready for as well,
that someone might yell at an inappropriate moment in a match?

A. Yeah. Sure. I mean, anything is possible out there. It's hard to
it's hard to control somebody else. I mean, you can't do. All you can
do is really control yourself but it doesn't change the fact that
it's disappointing that in sort of such a crucial point in the match
and after such a high standard of tennis for an hour and a half,
you know, that anybody would want to interfere with it. But, you know,
my look was to hopefully let them know that, you know, nobody
is appreciating that and not to do it again.

Q. Andre, aside from the difference in the outcome today versus LA,
what was the difference in your play today?

A. Well, today I won 15 or 16 points coming to the net, you know,
closing off a lot of high floating shots that he was hitting.
You know, in LA there was just a lot of points where he would sort of
scrap back into the point with a long stretch and a float chip and
I would let it bounce and then we would sort of re- engage in the point.
He ended up turning a lot of those points around. And tonight I was
more committed to making him feel that when he was on the stretch,
he's going to have to do something a little bit more than just float
that thing high over the net. My game plan was just to make him change
that part of his game for sure. But I picked some real good moments
to do it and I ended up winning most of them which is it's a big swing
because even if you miss that shot, you're making the guy thinking
about the fact that you might come in. But I happen to make most of
them tonight so it was good.
