When it comes to sending a message about the importance of defense,
Doc Rivers decided the simpler the better. That explains why a member
of the coaching staff wrote the following postgame equation on the board
in the visitors' locker room at the Wachovia Center: 90+90+81=Wins.
The numbers represent opponents' point totals from the Celtics'
three-game road winning streak.

"The results aren't the end-all," said Ainge. "I evaluate the
game the same way if it's our win or if it's their win. I'm evaluating
everything that's going on in practice, in travel,
in preparation, in game management, in players' focus. I'm evaluating
the whole gamut of it. We haven't done everything right whether we win or
lose the game. So, there's losses where I'm really pleased with how
everybody played. There's games that we've won where I've been
very displeased with [the players'] preparation,
their focus, their resiliency, but we were able to overcome it."

"The difference between winning and losing in this league is a fine
line," said Ainge. "To get consistent, we need to be a team
that handles the adversity that comes our way better.
We also need to have more players believing in themselves at times of
adversity.

"It's always good for morale to win, but sometimes winning makes you
complacent. We need to remain hungry. We need to remain desperate.
We are capable of beating teams with a better record. We are capable of
losing to teams that do not have as good a record as we do if we don't
have that urgency."
