BOSTON -- Alfredo Aceves and the Red Sox have avoided
arbitration with a $1.2 million deal, according to multiple
reports Sunday morning. That's the eighth of nine potential
arbitration cases the team has settled outside of a hearing,
leaving only designated hitter David Ortiz's situation unresolved.
The Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo first reported the deal,
which includes an additional $100,000 in potential incentives, via Twitter.
Aceves, a 30-year-old righty, went 10-2 with a 2.61 ERA in 114 innings
last season, mostly in relief. He filed for a 2012 salary of $1.6 million
, while the team offered $900,000.
Aceves' potential arbitration date had not been made public,
but general manager Ben Cherington indicated both Aceves'
and Ortiz's hearings were scheduled before pitchers and catchers
report Feb. 17.
Ortiz, who's one of two on-field holdovers the Red Sox
have from their 2004 championship team, is asking for
$16.5 million while the team has offered $12.65.
"We are working on that right now," Ortiz said in the
Dominican Republic on Saturday. "Hopefully, we will get
to an agreement so we don't have to go in front of the judge."
