Wenger ‘desperate’ to retain Arshavin
“We have had no contact,” said Wenger. “As far as I know, I believe he and
his wife are happy in London but what is very important as well is that I am
very happy with him.”
The Frenchman admits that Arshavin is suffering a slight dip in form. It was
suggested that maybe this has prompted this speculation.
“As soon as a player doesn’t play fantastically well, he is criticised,”
said Wenger. “We all know that.
“I personally believe he is a great player – he is going through a period
where it is more difficult at the moment. But he works very hard in training
– his attitude is fantastic and I am desperate to keep him.
“He has played almost every single game since the start of the season – he
has played for his national team as well and he is physically a bit less
fresh. But he will come back stronger than ever because he works very hard in
training.”

Wenger - No change in Almunia situation
Manuel Almunia’s future at Arsenal remains uncertain.
The Spanish goalkeeper has not played for the Club since the 3-2 defeat
against West Brom in September and is currently nursing an ankle injury.
Last week Arsène Wenger admitted there was “a small chance” that Almunia
could leave Arsenal during the transfer window. At his pre-match press
conference on Friday, the manager explained that the situation had not
changed.
“No [I haven’t spoken to him] and I haven’t seen a lot of Almunia because
we have travelled,” said Wenger.
“At the moment the situation is exactly the same as last week.”

Lukasz Fabianski and Wojciech Szczesny have staked their claims for a
first-team place in Almunia’s absence and Wenger has admitted that there is
a “small chance” his most senior keeper will leave.
If he does, expect another youngster to step up.
“No [I won’t sign another keeper] because we still have Vito Mannone who
plays at Hull who is available,” said Wenger.
“I think Almunia will stay, then we have three goalkeepers. People want us
to have four, five, six, I don’t know.
“We have a young Argentinean boy [Emilio Martinez] as well who is very good.
We have plenty of goalkeepers, I think a club who works well can produce good
goalkeepers.”
Mannone recently extended his loan deal with Hull until the end of the
season. Wenger is not sure whether he can recall him.
“It is a complicated question to answer because I don’t think we are [able
to],” he said.
“We had to make a decision at the time before we knew Almunia was going out
or not. I didn’t want the problem of bringing Vito back and being No 3 so we
took the gamble. I think we can bring him back only in the case of
exceptional injury.”
