Chelsea Here Chelsea There: Three goals and penalty shoot-out heroics
30 Nov 2020
In our round-up of loan highlights over the past seven days, there is a
maiden Premier League goal, plus Champions League and FA Cup success…

There was a big moment for Conor Gallagher this weekend when he scored his
first Premier League goal and it proved to be the winner for his loan club
West Bromwich Albion.
The only goal of the match at home to Sheffield United came when the
20-year-old midfielder fired in a cleared corner from the edge of the box
in the 13th minute. An open game in which their opponents also had plenty
of chances gave West Brom their first win of the season and lifted them
out of the relegation zone, while the Blades still look for theirs and are
bottom. Ethan Ampadu was missing for them due to injury.

Afterwards, West Brom boss Slaven Bilic spoke about comparisons between
Gallager and the Croatian's former team-mate at West Ham, Frank Lampard.
'It isn't going to help the boy to have so much praise and I'm not a big
fan of that but you can't help but notice it,' Bilic said. 'He ticks those
boxes. He plays in the same position, he has everything, and it's not a
little bit of everything, it's a lot of everything.'

Another headline result came midweek in the Champions League. Malang Sarr
returned to the south of France with Porto and enjoyed a good night,
keeping a clean sheet and winning 2-0. It keeps the Portuguese side in
second place in their group, three points behind Man City, and extends a
rotten run of form in the competition for a Marseille side managed by
former Blues boss Andre Villas-Boas. They set a new Champions League
record of 13 straight defeats.

Sarr and Porto followed up their win in UEFA competition with a domestic
victory on Saturday. It was another clean sheet for the defender as they
beat Santa Clara away 1-0. They are third in the Primeira Liga table.
Elsewhere in Portugal, Lucas Piazon played the first half of Rio Ave's 2-0
defeat by Gil Vicente.
In the Netherlands, Armando Broja's good form continues. He scored the
second of Vitesse's two late goals in a 2-0 win over Fortuna Sittard,
meeting a free-kick and the far post and volleying in. It is the striker's
fourth goal in his last six appearances and the result leaves Vitesse
second in the Eredivisie table, two points behind Ajax.

Also among the goals was Lewis Baker. He scored the only one of the game
for Eddie Newton's Trabzonspor side at the weekend, netting one of his
speciality free-kicks on the stroke of half-time against Ankaragucu. It
was the midfielder's first goal for the Turkish club who are 12th in the
table after back-to-back wins.

Last Monday night, Michy Batshuayi was in the Crystal Palace side that
despite plenty of the play at Turf Moor, allowed Burnley their first three
points of the season. Palace were without Wilfried Zaha due to positive
Covid test, and it was Batshuayi who had a chance to equalise the only
goal of the game after a big defensive mistake, but he could not beat Nick
Pope.

He was a substitute when Palace were in action in the Premier League again
as soon as Friday, and entered the action at home to Newcastle in the 82nd
minute with the game scoreless. Newcastle won the game with goals in the
88th and 90th minutes.
Victor Moses and Spartak Moscow are third in the Russian League, level on
points with the two teams above them, after a 2-0 home win over Rotor
Volgograd.
In Belgium, Matt Miazga helped Vincent Kompany's Anderlecht side keep a
clean sheet in a 0-0 draw with Standard Liege, but there was a match to
forget for Ike Ugbo and his Cercle Bruges team-mates who were defeated 5-1
at home by Genk.
In France, Trevoh Chalobah played in midfield in struggling Lorient's 1-0
home defeat by in-form Montpellier.
Cukaricki, fourth in the Serbian top flight, won 3-0 at home to Napredak
with Danilo Pantic in their midfield.
In midweek in the Championship, Jake Clarke-Salter played 75 minutes of
Birmingham's 1-1 draw away at Luton but there was defeat for Jamal
Blackman and Rotherham at QPR, our goalie conceding three first-half goals
in a 3-2 defeat, two of them in three added-time minutes including one
from the penalty spot.
On Saturday, Izzy Brown came on for the final five minutes of Sheffield
Wednesday's 0-0 draw at home to Stoke. Wednesday, who have had their
points deduction halved to six on appeal, are one point above bottom club
Derby.
The following day, Marc Guehi was in the Swansea side that kept a clean
sheet and won 1-0 away against a Nottingham Forest side now managed by
Chris Hughton. That victory moves the Welsh side up to fourth in the
Championship table, two points off the top.

Guehi was on the winning side at Forest
In League One in midweek, Accrington Stanley were 1-0 winners at home to
Crewe with Jon Russell playing the first half.
Ian Maatsen was in the Charlton side that lost heavily away at strugglers
Burton Albion midweek. They went down 4-2 on Tuesday but recovered to win
2-0 at Ipswich on Saturday and move up to third in League One. The Chelsea
defender played the whole of that game too.
Also playing away from home, Bristol Rovers came back from Wigan with a
point from a 0-0 draw. Luke McCormick played 66 minutes. The midfielder
made an ambitious attempt to break the deadlock from distance early in the
second half but shot a yard over. That was followed by victory in the FA
Cup second round this weekend, when Rovers beat non-league Darlington 6-0,
with McCormick providing an assist for the second goal.

Jamie Cumming was an FA Cup hero for Stevenage on Sunday when the League
Two side beat League One Hull City on penalties after the match had
finished 1-1. Having made saves in normal time, the Chelsea goalkeeper
then made two good stops in the shoot-out which ended 6-5.

He was also on the winning side in League Two earlier in the week when
Stevenage recorded a 2-1 home win over Port Vale. The three points moved
his side out of the relegation zone.
In the National League South, Ethan Wady was in goal for Dartford's 2-1
away win at Hungerford Town.
