Chelsea Here Chelsea There: Loftus-Cheek nets first Fulham goal, Barkley
injured and Gallagher denied
23 Nov 2020
Our round-up of the latest loan action includes news of a maiden Fulham
goal for Ruben Loftus-Cheek but a disappointing weekend of results for our
loanees in England, and in Europe there were plenty more minutes
accumulated and a couple of goals, too...

Ruben Loftus-Cheek netted his first Fulham goal but it was not enough to
prevent the Cottagers being beaten 3-2 by Everton on Sunday.
Loftus-Cheek came off the bench with half-an-hour remaining and his loan
side 3-1 down, and had an instant impact when he was fouled for a penalty
after a clever turn in the box. The spot-kick was missed by the slipping
Ivan Cavaleiro, but a minute later Loftus-Cheek scored with a deflected
effort, pictured top.

That was the end of the scoring, and the last of four Premier League
defeats suffered by Chelsea loanees this weekend.
Conor Gallagher was at the centre of controversy during West Brom's game
at Manchester United. He was tripped by Bruno Fernandes in the box but
after a VAR consultation and an on-field check, the decision was
overruled. He then appeared to have been fouled in the build-up to the
incident that led to a twice-taken Man United penalty that decided the
game.

At Villa Park, Ross Barkley pulled up with a hamstring injury inside the
first couple of minutes. They went on to lose to Brighton 2-1, while
Sheffield United, featuring Ethan Ampadu at left centre-back for the first
hour, were beaten 1-0 at home by West Ham.
That was the same scoreline by which both Rotherham, for whom Jamal
Blackman returned in goal, and Sheffield Wednesday, who featured Izzy
Brown as a late sub, lost in away games at Swansea and Preston
respectively. Marc Guehi was absent for the Swans with a muscle niggle.
In England's third tier, Jon Russell started for Accrington who drew 0-0
with Lincoln, and Ian Maatsen played the whole of Charlton's 1-1 draw at
Gillingham. Luke McCormick came as close as anyone to netting for Bristol
Rovers in their first game under new manager Paul Tisdale, a 1-0 defeat to
local rivals Swindon.
Jamie Cumming made a couple of very good saves for Stevenage but was
helpless to prevent them going down 2-1 at home to Bolton on Saturday.
They drop into the League Two relegation zone for the first time this
season.

Jamie Cumming was also in midweek EFL Trophy action as Stevenage lost to
Northampton on penalties
In the National League South, Ethan Wady made his league debut for
Dartford and kept a clean sheet as they beat Slough Town 2-0.
As ever, there was plenty of action on the continent. Victor Moses and
Spartak Moscow drew 1-1 with city rivals Dynamo, Lewis Baker played
throughout Trabzonspor's 1-0 home win over Erzurumspor, and Trevoh
Chalobah got 70 minutes for Ligue 1 Lorient as they were well beaten in
Lille.
In Italy, Tiemoue Bakayoko was sent off for Napoli for two yellow cards
midway through the second half as they were beaten 3-1 at home by AC
Milan, but Malang Sarr and Porto had better fortune in the Portuguese Cup,
winning 2-0 at GD Fabril. In the same competition, Lucas Piazon came on to
help Rio Ave avoid an upset at Moncal.
Ike Ugbo scored a brace as Cercle Bruges won 2-0 at Waasland-Beveren in
the Belgian Pro League, where elsewhere Anderlecht, featuring Matt Miazga
in defence, were surprisingly beaten 2-1 by Beerschot.

Over the Dutch border, Armando Broja was in the Vitesse Arnhem team that
drew 1-1 at Groningen. In their second tier, George McEachran got an
assist for MVV Mastricht, but they threw away a 3-0 lead after his
substitution to only earn a point against Jong PSV. Also in the
Netherlands, Juan Castillo featured for Jong AZ Alkmaar in a 4-1 loss at
Excelsior.
In the Serbian Premier Division, Danilo Pantic played the second half for
Cukaricki, during which both goals in their 1-1 draw with Mladost Lucani
were scored.
