Chelsea Here Chelsea There: Sarr shines at Porto, Barkley praised for
Villa form and FA Cup heroics from Cumming
09 Nov 2020
In our round-up of the action involving Chelsea's players on loan over the
last week, there were more impressive performances from Ross Barkley and
Malang Sarr, while Jamie Cumming made himself a Stevenage hero as the FA
Cup proper got under way with the first round.

Ross Barkley impressed as Aston Villa maintained their 100 per cent away
record in the Premier League by beating Arsenal 3-0 at the Emirates. The
midfielder was judged to be blocking the goalkeeper's view when an early
strike from John McGinn flew in, meaning it was ruled out for offside, but
Barkley made amends after half-time when he provided the cross for Ollie
Watkins to score Villa's second goal. It is the first time the club have
ever won their first three away league games in a season.

His early performances for the Birmingham club have seen manager Dean
Smith suggesting he deserves an international recall for England. 'Good
players, they can play with each other very quickly, they don't need time
to work each other out,' said Smith. 'Ross was a marquee signing for us,
he wanted to get game time to get in the Euros squad. His performances
will be nudging Gareth Southgate.'

Elsewhere in the Premier League, young midfielder Conor Gallagher could
not prevent West Bromwich Albion losing at home against Tottenham Hotspur.
They put up a valiant effort at The Hawthorns, but were ultimately undone
1-0 by a Harry Kane winner in the 88th minute.
It was a similar story for Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who came on as a late
substitute for Fulham as they went down 1-0 following West Ham United's
injury-time winner at the London Stadium.

Marc Guehi and Swansea City's unbeaten run away from home finally came to
an end. They had climbed up to second place in the Championship table
after a 1-1 draw at Brentford extended that run to five away games without
defeat, but a late goal brought it to an end on Saturday as they lost 1-0
at Norwich City.
Izzy Brown came off the bench in two big matches for Sheffield Wednesday,
as they beat Bournemouth 1-0 and drew 0-0 with Millwall. Those results
took them off the bottom of the Championship table for the first time this
season, having started the campaign on -12 points.
Jamal Blackman was unable to prevent Rotherham United losing 1-0 at home
to Luton Town.
Left-back Ian Maatsen helped Charlton Athletic go joint second in League
One by recording their sixth consecutive victory, beating Fleetwood 3-2 on
Tuesday. However, he was only used as a late substitute when a
much-changed Addicks side were knocked out of the FA Cup on Saturday,
beaten 1-0 at home by Plymouth Argyle.

Nathan Baxter and Jon Russell both started Accrington Stanley's FA Cup tie
away at Tranmere Rovers, with Tariq Uwakwe joining them off the bench in
the second half of Accrington's first fixture since 20 October. Baxter did
all he could to keep their side in the competition, with one late
point-blank save keeping things at 1-1, but could not stop Tranmere
finding the winner from the resulting corner.
Jamie Cumming was on the losing side for Stevenage last Tuesday when they
were defeated 3-1 at Colchester United, but emerged as an FA Cup hero for
his role in them avoiding an upset on Saturday. After Stevenage had twice
gone ahead and been pegged back by non-league Concord Rangers, the
goalkeeper produced a brilliant save right at the end of extra time and
then again at the start of the penalty shoot-out to put Boro through to
the second round.

second round
Luke McCormick also booked his place in the FA Cup second round as he
featured throughout Bristol Rovers' 2-1 win away at Walsall.
== Action abroad ==
Armando Broja helped Vitesse to keep pace with Ajax at the top of the
Eredivisie table by beating Emmen 3-1 despite playing over an hour with 10
men. That leaves them in second place on goal difference.
Malang Sarr enjoyed a good week with Porto, as two comfortable home wins
left them well in contention in both the Champions League and the
Portuguese top flight. First they dismissed Marseille 3-0 in Europe to
move into the second qualification spot in Group C, before beating
Portimonense 3-1 to keep pace with early Liga NOS pace setters Sporting
Lisbon. Also in Portugal, Lucas Piazon and Rio Ave drew 0-0 at Belenenses
on Friday evening.
Tiemoue Bakayoko helped Napoli stay third in the Serie A table with a
narrow 1-0 victory away at Bologna, keeping them within three points of
leaders AC Milan.
A last-minute equaliser robbed Anderlecht and Matt Miazga of victory in
their 1-1 draw at Gent in Belgium, but they remain within two points of
top spot in the table, having lost just once in their opening 12 league
matches. Ike Ugbo scored his fifth goal of the season in Belgium for
Cercle Bruges, but still ended up on the losing side as they were
defeated 3-1 by Zulte Waregem.

There were mixed fortunes in Spain for Kenedy, as he helped Granada go top
of their Europa League group by beating Omonia Nicosia 2-0 in Cyprus,
maintaining their unbeaten campaign in the competition, but came off at
half-time during their defeat at surprise La Liga leaders Real Sociedad by
the same scoreline on Sunday.
Trevoh Chalobah was unfortunate to find himself on the losing side with
Lorient, with the scores tied at 0-0 when he left the pitch with 10
minutes remaining, only for him to see his side concede two late goals to
lose 2-0 to Nantes.
In Russia, Victor Moses played the first 45 minutes of Spartak Moscow's
2-2 draw away at Ural Yekaterinburg, coming off at half-time with his side
leading 2-1.
