Levi Colwill captained England Under-19s to victory in their European
Championship qualifying opener today, while Harvey Vale also started as
the young Lions ran out 4-0 winners.

Colwill, who is currently on loan from Chelsea at Huddersfield Town, wore
the skipper's armband and played all but the final 11 minutes in
Stockholm. He featured in a back four, a change from the three-man defence
deployed by the Terriers in the Championship.


Meanwhile, Vale played the full 90 minutes in a game that England
dominated from start to finish. The forward, who was recently on the bench
for Thomas Tuchel's senior Blues, had a couple of efforts to get on the
scoresheet, contributing to the 28 shots that were taken by England as
opposed to the three registered for Andorra.

Vale is back in Sweden after being part of the men's first team squad in
the Champions League recently


The goals were netted by Tottenham's Dane Scarlett, Aston Villa's Carney
Chukwuemeka and former Chelsea Academy winger Samuel Iling-Junior, now at
Juventus and a recent opponent for the Blues in the UEFA Youth League.
Charlie Webster and Jude Soonsup-Bell were unused substitutes.


England Under-19s are next in action against Switzerland on Saturday,
before rounding off the group stage against the hosts Sweden next week.
That clash could pit Ian Foster's side against Edwin Andersson, our young
attacker who came off the bench for the Swedes in their group opener
against Switzerland, which they won 2-1 courtesy of a stoppage-time strike.

There was a big win for already-qualified Germany and a crucial one for
Spain as the final international break of the year got underway with World
Cup qualifiers, while Baba Rahman and Ghana's hopes of progress will come
down to a winner-takes-all decider…

Germany were rampant and ruthless in Wolfsburg as they made lowly
Liechtenstein pay the ultimate price for an early red card. Die Mannschaft
started the day comfortably clear at the top of Group J and already assured
of their place at Qatar 2022, though there was 'nein' sign of complacency
as they hit nine past their local opponents.


Antonio Rudiger had a relatively comfortable evening at the back for Hansi
Flick's men, helping Germany to their fifth clean sheet in six games
during this qualifying campaign. The decisive moment came inside 10
minutes when Jens Hofer conceded a penalty and was shown a red card for a
dangerous tackle in the box on Leon Goretzka.

Manchester City's Ilkay Gundogan stepped up to dispatch from 12 yards and
the floodgates opened from there, with the hosts racing into a 4-0 lead
before the first quarter of the contest was over.


Leroy Sane bagged a brace, one before the break and one just after, while
Marco Reus, Ridle Baku and Thomas Muller were also all on the scoresheet.


Germany's final group game is away in Armenia on Sunday, with Kai Havertz
in contention to return after missing training with the national team so
far this week. He was suspended for the Liechtenstein game anyway, as is
Rudiger for the group finale after picking up his second booking of the
campaign.

Elsewhere, Cesar Azpilicueta was a late substitute as Spain recorded a
crucial win against Greece. La Roja are still fighting for their place at
the World Cup finals and needed the three points to wrestle back control
of the group from Sweden.


It was a tough affair in Athens and a penalty proved to be the difference
between the two sides as Pablo Sarabia helped Luis Enrique's men earn the
all-important win. Chelsea captain Azpilicueta replaced Inigo Martinez in
the 89th minute, making sure his team-mates got over the line after a
cagey encounter.

Spain now host Sweden in the group decider on Sunday, with a draw enough
for the 2010 world champions to seal a place at the final tournament.


Qualification in Africa is approaching the end of the second group phase
and Baba Rahman was in action for Ghana, playing the duration as the Black
Stars dropped crucial points against Ethiopia in Johannesburg.


The defender, on loan this season in the Championship with Reading,
started at left-back and his side took the lead through former Swansea
City striker Andre Ayew midway through the first half. Yet Ethiopia hit
back after the break and snatched a draw with an equalising goal 18
minutes from time.


Combined with South Africa's victory against Zimbabwe in the other group
game, it leaves Ghana three points off the top with one match remaining
and only the group winners advancing to the final head-to-head round. The
clash between the top two in Cape Coast on Sunday will now determine which
nation progresses, with only a Ghana victory enough to take them through.


Meanwhile, Senegal had already progressed to the next round prior to a 1-1
draw against Togo in which Edouard Mendy was between the posts for the
Lions of Teranga.

An own goal late in the first half beat the Chelsea goalkeeper and handed
the hosts an advantage, which seemed to be enough to seal victory before a
stoppage-time leveller. Senegal finish with a game against Congo on
Sunday, though they were handed a blow as Liverpool forward Sadio Mane
left the field injured before the interval.


It was a busy evening for England's youngsters, with Conor Gallagher
continuing his impressive start to the season with another all-action
display for the Under-21s at Turf Moor. The midfield man lined up once
again for Lee Carsley's men and played a key role in their second goal
against Czech Republic as his fierce shot was palmed into the path of
Anthony Gordon to tap in.

Everton's young forward had forced an own goal moments earlier and a third
from Folarin Balogun of Arsenal made things even better before the
visitors pulled a goal back from the penalty spot before half-time.


Yet England were worthy winners as they gave their European Championship
qualification hopes a timely boost by closing the gap at the top of the
group to two points on the Czechs with a game in hand. Gallagher, who
helped set the high-pressing tone right from the start with his energy and
enthusiasm, was replaced late on with the game won.


England Under-20s were also in action and Henry Lawrence was a starter at
right-back but the young Lions went down to a 2-0 defeat in Portugal.
Meanwhile, the Under-18s were beaten 3-2 by the Netherlands in a game that
Lewis Hall and Brodi Hughes began on the bench.

Internationals: James shines in big England win, Gilmour helps Scotland
continue World Cup dream but pain for Jorginho

England, with two Chelsea players in their starting line-up, took a big
step on Friday night towards automatic qualification for the Qatar World
Cup, while Billy Gilmour and Scotland now know they can make the
tournament next year if they are successful in the play-offs after
securing second place in their group.

There was another victory for Andreas Christensen and Denmark but Italy
still have work to do to claim first position in their group after
Jorginho missed a 90th-minute penalty.


England cruised to a 5-0 victory over Albania at Wembley with all the
goals coming in the first half. For Chelsea fans, there was little
surprise to see our in-form wing-backs Reece James and Ben Chilwell both
selected by Gareth Southgate. Mason Mount was unavailable following his
dental operation.


Armando Broja, currently on loan at Southampton, was ruled out of a place
in the Albania attack due to a minor muscle injury, and his nation
struggled with England racing into a big early lead.


The excellent James made his presence felt inside 10 minutes when he
curled in a free-kick superbly for Harry Maguire to head the Three Lions
ahead from close range. James was involved too in the move that led to the
second goal soon after, another headed strike, this time from Harry Kane.

Before that goal, a Kyle Walker mistake led to a one-on-one, saved by
Jordan Pickford, and visitors to Wembley did not come close to scoring
again.


Jordan Henderson made it 3-0 before half-an-hour was up when England cut
through the middle of the Albanian defence. A flying save prevented Kane
making it 4-0 soon after but the England captain did just that with
another couple of minutes played, a left-footed finished from that side
of the goal.


Kane was just wide with a couple of hat-trick chances before the interval,
the second from a James cross, but on the verge of the half-time whistle
he volleyed in a corner to make it 5-0.


Midway through the second half, there was a clash of heads between James
and John Stones which floored both players. After treatment, they
continued and the Chelsea man shot wide with his next involvement but not
that long after he was withdrawn.


Chilwell played the whole game and although less prominent as an attacking
force than his club colleague, he put in a tidy display and was rarely
tested in his defensive work.

If England avoid defeat against San Marino on Monday they are guaranteed a
place at the World Cup. Even with an England defeat, second-place Poland
would have to win at home to Hungary and overcome a goal difference
deficit of six.


Earlier in the day, Scotland earned themselves a place in the play-offs
with a 2-0 win and Billy Gilmour played in his first football match since
the last international break. Steve Clarke named the 20-year-old in his
starting line-up away in Moldova.


Scotland made the early running in the first half and although their
opponents came back into the contest, Gilmour and his team-mates went in
at the break 1-0 up thanks to a goal shortly before half-time. It was
scored by Rangers' full-back Nathan Patterson with a run and diagonal
strike from the right.

Scotland had the ball in the net inside the first three minutes but that
first effort was offside. Gilmour then struck a swerving shot from the
edge of the area which was beaten out, followed by further Scotland
threats with saves from Stuart Armstrong and Andy Robertson shots.


Craig Gordon at the other end made an even better save from a Moldova
header but then the Scots took the lead and from then on they dominated.


Che Adams could have added to the lead just after half-time and later had
a goal ruled out for offside. Gilmour was becoming a stronger and stronger
presence in the game, especially with his running with the ball, and only
a last-ditch block prevented him scoring just before the Scotland second
goal.


That came midway through the half when Adams finished from a low Patterson
cross.


Gilmour, whose contribution was being recognised in song from the Tartan
Army, was on some of the corners and from one it needed a clearance off
the line to keep out a header from Liam Cooper. Our on-loan midfielder
then scuffed a shot wide.

A handball by Patterson gave Moldova a late penalty but a nervous finish
to the game was avoided when Gordon saved it.


Denmark were already guaranteed to top the group Scotland are in and they
continued their perfect campaign with their ninth win, 3-1 at home to
Faroe Islands. Andreas Christensen was in the defence.


The Danes had a 1-0 lead at half-time, given to them by Bologna's Andreas
Skov Olsen with a far-post finish after the Faroes' keeper had lost his
footing on a soggy pitch.


Christensen had a second-half shot saved before Jacob Bruun Larsen made it
2-0, finishing off a counter-attack from close range. Denmark's remarkable
record of not having conceded was ended in the 89th-minute when the Faroes
scored but the two-goal winning margin was restored deep in stoppage time
by Joakim Maehle.


Scotland and Denmark finish their qualification campaigns when they face
each other in Glasgow on Monday.


There was a shock start for group-leaders Italy at home to Switzerland when
they conceded after just 11 minutes with a sharp finish from Mainz player
Silvan Widmer.


Jorginho and Emerson Palmieri both started for the European champions and
it was our left-back, currently on loan at Lyon, who proved a major
attacking threat. He advanced and crossed for a Jorginho shot that was
blocked, leading to a good save.

Italy did equalise before half-time when a free-kick was bravely headed in
by Giovanni Di Lorenzo, the goal given by Premier League referee Anthony
Taylor after a VAR check for offside.


The game in Rome was heading towards a draw before Italy had a major
chance to win it close to the end. A shove in the back of Domenico Berardi
was judged worthy of a penalty after Taylor had been instructed to view
the incident on the screen, but Jorginho struck the spot-kick well over
the bar.

Italy and Switzerland are tied at the top of their group on points with
the Azzurri having a +2 better goal difference. With one game to go to
claim top spot, they play away against Northern Ireland on Monday with the
Swiss hosting Bulgaria.


At junior international level, Academy goalkeeper Lucas Bergstrom remained
on the bench as Finland Under-21s went down 3-1 away to Norway, leaving
them in fourth in their Euro championship qualification group.

Kai Havertz was the pick of the Chelsea players in international action on
Sunday evening, as he netted for Germany in their 4-1 victory over Armenia
in Yerevan.

The Blues attacker opened the scoring for Hansi Flick's free-scoring
German side with a clever left-footed finish, after getting in front of
his man at the near post to meet a cross from the right.


Havertz could have scored within the first five minutes, but saw his
effort cannon back off the post and away from danger.


The forward, playing in the most central role of an attacking three with
Thomas Muller and Leroy Sane, was a constant threat to the Armenian
defence and deserved his goal.

Ikay Gundogan scored twice for Germany – the first a penalty in
first-half injury time and then the second five minutes after the break
following a goalkeeper mistake.


Former Manchester United midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan pulled a goal back
for the hosts from the penalty spot before Jonas Hofmann restored
Germany's three-goal lead with a neat finish five minutes later.


Germany had already booked their place at the 2022 World Cup and the three
points keeps them top of their qualifying group. Havertz's Chelsea
team-mates Toni Rudiger (suspended) and Timo Werner (injured) missed
Sunday's victory.


Elsewhere, Cesar Azpilicueta started for Spain as they defeated Sweden 1-0
in Seville to book their place at next year's World Cup, thanks to a late
winner from former Chelsea striker, Alvaro Morata.

unscathed, putting in an accomplished performance as he helped his side to
a clean sheet.


The victory, which came courtesy of Morata's strike four minutes from

points clear of second-placed Sweden.

Staying in Africa, Baba Rahman played 90 minutes as Ghana secured a big

Both N'Golo Kante and Thiago Silva remained unused by France and Brazil
respectively, while Christian Pulisic played 25 minutes for USA in the
final round of international fixtures in 2021.

Kante watched on as France beat Finland 2-0 in Helsinki, after the Blues
midfielder played over 70 minutes in France's previous outing on Saturday
evening, and is now well rested ahead of returning to Cobham.


Goals from Karim Benzema and Kylian Mbappe ensured France made it eight
games in Group D without defeat, topping the table with 18 points.


Thiago Silva was also an unused substitute as Brazil played out a 0-0 draw
with Argentina overnight, with the draw a positive result for Argentina
who have now qualified for the World Cup next year. Brazil had already
qualified.


After a dramatic win for Christian Pulisic's USA in Cincinnati last week,
they followed up that victory with a 1-1 draw away to Jamaica in Kingston
last night.

Tim Weah opened the scoring early on before West Ham's Michail Antonio
scored a great goal to level the scoring. Pulisic did play the final 25
minutes, however his introduction did not change his national team's
fortunes.


With Mexico losing 2-1 to Canada later on in the day, Canada now top the
group with USA sat one point behind with 15 points.


Elsewhere, at Under-19 level, Levi Colwill captained and scored a thumping
header for England Under-19s as they won 2-0 away to Sweden Under-19s.

Another three points for Ian Foster's side mean they remain undefeated in
Group 1, winning two and drawing once, and have now qualified for the
European Championships which take place in Slovakia next year.


The 18-year-old's towering header came midway through the second half, as
he jumped the highest to connect to a great corner from Bristol City's
Alex Scott.


Colwill, who is currently on-loan at second tier side Huddersfield Town,
played the full 90 minutes at left-back, while Harvey Vale was the other
Blues connection to start the match in Stockholm.


England went a goal up just six minutes into the match through Dane
Scarlett after the Greek referee pointed to the penalty spot, and
controlled the game from then on in with Colwill's header a nice cushion
going into the final 25 minutes.


Blues midfielder Charlie Webster was a late change for England. Jude
Soonsup-Bell was an unused substitute for the away side.


Meanwhile, Chelsea Under-19 left-winger Edwin Andersson made a substitute
appearance for the hosts in the 74th minute.
