Toni Rudiger, Timo Werner and Kai Havertz helped Germany recover from an
early goal conceded to win 2-1 against Romania in Friday night's World Cup
qualifiers.

There was a comfortable victory for Mateo Kovacic and Croatia and Ethan
Ampadu played in a Wales side that was required to come from behind to
take a respectable point against Czech Republic.


Rudiger and Werner both started for Germany in a home match played in
Hamburg, and Werner was once again the victim of a VAR review when as
early as the fifth minute, the referee awarded a penalty for a foul on the
Chelsea man but the decision was then overturned.


Very soon after, the Germans found themselves behind to a quality
counter-attack, ended when Ianis Hagi, the Rangers player who is son of
Romania legend Gheorghe Hagi, skilfully tricked his way past the home
team's rearguard, Rudiger being one those players beaten, and scored with
a crisp shot.


After that, Germany dominated but could not find a way back in the first
half despite some openings.


Shortly before half-time, Werner tried to play a team-mate in rather than
go for goal himself during a moment of chaos in the Romania defence, but
the Germans were crowded out.

Serge Gnabry went close on the verge of half-time, having poked wide of
the goal when on the floor earlier, and Rudiger also tried his luck just
before the interval. Although shooting wide, it was a respectable attempt.


Gnabry, the Germans' most threatening player, scored the equaliser with a
shot from outside the area seven minutes into the second half. Marco Reus
missed a great chance for a lead soon after and although in the right
position in front of goal later on, Werner had to deal with an over-struck
cross and could not threaten the goal with it.


Sixty-five minutes were played before Havertz was introduced. Ten minutes
later after a strong run, the 22-year-old was denied by a great saving
tackle.

Instead it was another substitute, Thomas Muller, who scored the winner,
side-footing in at the far post after a towering near-post header from
Leon Goretzka.


Hansi Flick's side lead their group by four points from North Macedonia
and Armenia with seven games played.


Croatia were in Cyprus for their game and with Kovacic starting, they
scored two minutes into added time at the end of the first half. Luka
Modric set up Ivan Perisic for the goal but then missed a penalty early in
the second half.


Kovacic was replaced by Mario Pasalic with 63 minutes played but from the
bench, our midfielder was able to watch his team make the points safe with
10 minutes remaining when RB Leipzig's Josko Gvardiol scored. Hajduk
Split's Marko Livaja made it 3-0 at the very end.

Croatia are at the top of their group, level on points with Russia.


Wales gave a good account of themselves away to Czech Republic. Ethan
Ampadu, currently on loan in Italy at Venezia, played the whole game in a
back-three but got forward early on with a strong run that led to a
penalty appeal, turned down.


Wales went ahead 10 minutes before half-time when Aaron Ramsey hit the net
from a tight angle, but the lead did not last long as Jakub Pesek lashed
in a loose ball after an initial save from Danny Ward.

Ward's night took a big turn for the worse shortly after the restart when
he contrived to allow a back pass from Ramsey into his net to put the
Czechs 2-1 ahead.


However the Welsh were back on level terms with 68 minutes played when
Fulham's Harry Wilson finished nicely from a Daniel James
defence-splitter. The game ended in a 2-2 draw although the Welsh had
chances to win it.


With a game in hand on tonight's opponents, Wales have the same points but
they both trail runaway leaders Belgium by eight points.


== European Under-21 Championship qualifiers ==


Thierno Ballo started in Austria Under-21s' match away to Estonia and
played 57 minutes of a big win, with his side doubling their half-time
advantage to win 4-0. The attacking midfielder, who is currently on loan
in Austria, assisted for the third goal shortly before going off. Austria
lie third in their group, three points off the pace.


Ian Maatsen played a big part in Netherlands Under-21s coming from 2-0
down to draw 2-2 in Switzerland. The left-back, who is currently plying
his club trade near the top of the Championship while on loan at Coventry
City, was the main set-piece taker for the Dutch, who were 1-0 down at the
break with the deficit doubled shortly after the restart.


However a Maatsen corner on 62 minutes led to one goal pulled back and
then seven minutes later, he directly assisted the equaliser with another
of his corner deliveries. The result places the Netherlands three points
behind the Swiss who lead the group having played a game more.


Defender Sam McClelland played the whole of Northern Ireland's away match
in Russia but suffered a 1-0 defeat. It is a result that leaves his side
bottom of their group, with one win from three games.


Goalkeeper Lucas Bergstrom was an unused sub in Finland Under-21s' game in
Azerbaijan. He watched his side gain a point from a 1-1 draw despite a red
card midway through the second half.

There was disappointment in Milan for two Blues on the international stage
as France came from behind again to beat Spain and claim the UEFA Nations
League title.

Les Bleus were without the commanding presence of N'Golo Kante in midfield
and fell behind, just as they had in the semi-final against Belgium
earlier in the week.


Yet strikes from Karim Benzema and Kylian Mbappe in the final 25 minutes
at the San Siro sealed victory and ensured the world champions added
another title to their trophy cabinet following a disappointing Euro 2020
campaign.


For Spain, Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso were deployed at right-back
and left-back respectively, the latter winning his fifth international cap
and his second in four days following his first call-up in three years.

In an even first period, both sides sought to play quickly out from the
back in the face of some intense pressing. Azpilicueta had to be on high
alert against the pace of Benzema and Mbappe, with the Chelsea skipper
clearing from inside his own six-yard box with goalkeeper Unai Simon
stranded after Paul Pogba had threaded a perfect pass through for the Real
Madrid striker.


Down the other end, Alonso looked to repeat his trick of causing problems
for Hugo Lloris with a cheeky free-kick that briefly caught the Spurs man
by surprise but flew narrowly wide. The 30-year-old then did well to
thwart Mbappe down the right as France threatened in the second half,
although it was La Roja who struck first in the final when Mikel Oyarzabal
produced a smart left-footed finish to make it 1-0.


That came seconds after Theo Hernandez had hit the crossbar for Didier
Deschamps's side and the French took just two minutes to restore parity as
Benzema cut inside Azpilicueta and curled a brilliant effort into the far
top corner.

Those quickfire goals changed the complexion of the game completely and a
frantic final period played out. Both sides had chances but the winner
came 10 minutes from time as Mbappe escaped in behind at last before
clinically dispatching the winner.


The striker was ahead of the last defender when the pass was played to
him, however a touch on the ball from a desperate Eric Garcia was adjudged
to have started a new phase of play.


That left Luis Enrique's side annoyed but the damage had been done and it
was France left to celebrate being crowned the new Nations League winners.

Earlier in the day in Turin, Emerson Palmieri started and Jorginho came
off the bench as reigning European champions Italy beat Belgium 2-1 to win
the third-place play-off.


Yet it was Michy Batshuayi, on loan from Chelsea at Besiktas this term and
leading the line for the Red Devils in place of the absent Romelu Lukaku,
who caused many of the early problems in a bright first half for the
visitors.


Lukaku had been ruled out in the build-up with what the Belgium boss
called 'muscle fatigue' and has returned to his homeland for further
treatment. In his place, Batshuayi stepped in and stepped up.

The 28-year-old fired a right-footed strike from just inside the box
narrowly over inside eight minutes before teeing up Alexis Saelemaekers,
who struck the frame of the goal with a curling effort.

The deficit doubled midway through the half when Chiesa was upended in the
box by Leicester City full-back Timothy Castagne and up stepped Domenico
Berardi to squeeze his spot-kick past the outstretched hand of Thibaut
Courtois.


Jorginho was soon introduced to add control in midfield and the Azzurri
managed to keep their opponents at bay until a few moments from time when
young midfielder Charles de Ketelaere finished a swift counter-attack
through the legs of Donnarumma.


Yet time was up for Roberto Martinez and his side as Italy held on to
claim UEFA Nations League bronze in front of a home crowd.


== Ton-up Thiago ==


Congratulations to Thiago Silva who made his 100th appearance for Brazil
in a World Cup qualifier away to Colombia.


The 37-year-old started on the bench but came on with 71 minutes played of
a match that ended 0-0.

It is the first points dropped by Brazil in this qualification campaign.
They had won the first nine games so still lead the 10-nation-strong group
by six points from Argentina in second. The top four qualify automatically
for Qatar.


Although Colombia are currently bottom, this was a fairly even contest
with most chances coming late on when both goalkeepers were forced to make
saves.


Thiago Silva won the first of 100 caps back in June 2008.

Kai Havertz and Timo Werner ensured Germany became the first European
nation to book their place at next year's World Cup by scoring three times
between them against North Macedonia on Monday night.

It finished 4-0 and made it seven wins from eight in qualifying for the
team now managed by Hansi Flick. They have an unassailable eight-point
lead over both Romania and North Macedonia with two qualifiers remaining.

On a rainy night in Skopje, the Germans were made to work harder for their
victory than the final scoreline suggests. In the first half, North
Macedonia displayed the defensive solidity and counter-attacking threat
that earned them a place at Euro 2020 and has them well in the hunt to
make the World Cup qualifiers, but they wilted in the face of immense
German pressure after the interval.


Flick was without Toni Rudiger because of a back injury, but he did start
Havertz and Werner in Germany's attack. On the half-hour, Werner shot
straight at the home side's keeper Stole Dimitrievski, and he then twisted
and turned closer in before thumping the post in first-half stoppage time.

Four minutes into the second half, Serge Gnabry split the Macedonian
defence open and an unselfish Thomas Muller rolled the ball to his left as
Dimitrievski came out, giving Havertz a tap-in. It was his second goal of
this qualifying campaign.


Havertz was replaced on the hour, shortly after a booking which will rule
him out of the next qualifier in November.

Germany doubled their lead in the 70th minute and it was a deserved goal
for Werner, who raced on to Muller's clever pass and smashed a first-time
shot past Dimitrievski.


He only had to wait another three minutes for his next goal, beautifully
curling a shot beyond Dimitrievski when a cross reached him at the far

Wales' qualifying campaign concludes next month with games at home to
Belarus and Belgium. Four points there will guarantee them a play-off
spot.


Without the suspended Mateo Kovacic, Croatia were held to a 2-2 draw at
home to Slovakia. They slip to second in Group H after Russia won in
Slovenia, and the 2018 World Cup finalists will likely need to beat Russia
next month to guarantee their place in Qatar.


It was a successful day for three England youth teams who all won without
conceding. Seven different Chelsea players featured across the different
age groups.


England Under-21s made heavy weather of their European Championship
qualifier in Andorra. With Conor Gallagher prominent in midfield, they
struggled to break down the resilient hosts despite plenty of possession
and territory, and were then reduced to 10 men on the hour when Rhian
Brewster was harshly shown a second yellow card.


However, Andorra were undone by the first corner they won in the game,
with England counter-attacking from it. Curtis Jones slipped in Emile
Smith Rowe to finally break the deadlock with 20 minutes remaining. It
finished 1-0, leaving England on seven points from three qualifiers ahead
of a crucial fixture at home to Czech Republic next month.


Earlier today, England Under-20s thrashed Czech Republic 5-0 in Teplice.
Tino Anjorin missed an early penalty for the Young Lions but did get his
name on the scoresheet in the second half, sliding in to convert a low
cross in the 70th minute. It was his last action before being replaced.

Henry Lawrence, on loan at AFC Wimbledon this season, completed the game
at full-back.


At Under-18 level, England defeated Russia 3-0 in Marbella. Charlie
Webster captained and Jude Soonsup-Bell and Lewis Hall also started. Hall
rounded off the scoring in the 54th minute, sweeping a finish into the
corner of the net.


Brodi Hughes was brought off the bench late on, with Silko Thomas an
unused sub as Ryan Garry secured his first win as coach of the England
Under-18s.

Andreas Christensen and Denmark have booked their place at the next World
Cup finals thanks to victory at home to Austria on Tuesday night.

Our defender helped to ensure the Austrians failed to muster a single shot
on target in Copenhagen, with a 1-0 win making it eight wins out of eight
for the Danes in their group.


Good saves by Austria goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann kept out Skov Olsen and
Mikkel Damsgaard in the first half, with the winning goal coming early in
the second. It was made by a wonderful run from Thomas Delaney with Joakim
Maehle the scorer.


On the hour, Christensen was in the right place to make an important block
on a well-struck volley from Marco Grull and his team saw out the win from
that point on.


In the same group, Scotland in second place maintained a four-point gap to
third-place Israel although Steve Clarke's side left it very late to
overcome Faroe Islands away.


Billy Gilmour started again and our young midfielder, on loan this season
at Norwich, was bright in early attacks but Scotland were grateful for a
great double save from Craig Gordon halfway through the first half.

In fact the Faroes had the better of the opening 45 minutes and although
Scotland upped their game after the interval, the breakthrough would not
come.


Gilmour shot just wide in the 64th minute after some sustained pressure
and then his closer-range effort was saved. He went narrowly wide one more
time before being involved in the move for the winner when it eventually
came on 86 minutes. Rangers' Nathan Patterson crossed, the home side
struggled to deal with it, and the ball went in off QPR forward Lyndon
Dykes.


England took a little stumble on their path to likely qualification for
Qatar. They drew 1-1 against Hungary to drop points for only the second
time in the campaign.


Mount Mason started on the left of a midfield three, with Declan Rice and
Phil Foden the other two, but it was a disjointed performance from the
Three Lions who went behind at the midpoint of the opening half.


Luke Shaw conceded a penalty for a dangerous high boot and the spot-kick
was dispatched by the Hungarians.

John Stones brought the sides level when he side-footed in at the far post
after a Foden free-kick was deflected on at the front stick. Raheem
Sterling had a far-post header from close range saved on the stroke of
half time so the sides went in all-square at 1-1.


Stones could have had a second just past the hour when he headed a corner
a few inches wide. That too was from a Foden delivery. The Hungary
goalkeeper smothered when Sterling was played through later in the game,
and with a strong defensive performance ahead of him, England rarely
looked like finding a winner. Ben Chilwell was an unused sub.


Albania, second place in England's group, went down 1-0 at home to Poland.
They waited until the 58th minute to bring Armando Broja off the bench.


Senegal secured their place in the final stage of World Cup qualification
in Africa with a 3-1 victory away against Namibia. Edouard Mendy featured
in goal throughout for the Lions of Teranga, as he has done throughout the
campaign. In today's game in Johannesburg, former Bristol City striker
Famara Diedhiou hit a hat-trick.

Senegal have won all four of their qualifiers in this second qualifying
section and now cannot be overhauled at the top of Group H. They therefore
advance to a two-legged play-off tie against another African group winner,
with the winners earning a place at Qatar 2022.


Baba Rahman, currently on loan at Reading, was also in action for a Ghana
side that won 1-0 against Zimbabwe in Harare to take them to the top of
Group G. The only goal of the game came half an hour in courtesy of
Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey, with Baba playing the full 90 minutes.
The Black Stars have two final qualifiers against Ethiopia and South
Africa next month to secure a place in the play-offs.


There were Chelsea players in opposing squads as Finland met Austria in an
Under-21 European Championship qualifier and it was the one who featured
in the game, Thierno Ballo, who ended up on the losing side with Austria
going down 3-1. Lucas Bergstrom remained an unused sub for the winners.


Ian Maatsen remained on the bench for Netherlands Under-21s' 5-0 win over
Wales. Former Chelsea Academy striker Daishawn Redan was among the goals.


Sam McClelland played in defence for Northern Ireland U21s who went down
3-0 away to their group leaders Spain.


Bryan Fiabema led the line for Norway Under-19s as they went down 1-0 to
Georgia in qualification for next summer's European Championship at that
age group. The striker was unable to add to his four goals in qualifying
but Norway still progress to the elite round as group runners-up


Harvey Vale played 77 minutes of an England Under-19s friendly but lost
out 3-2 to Belgium in a game played in Spain. Spurs striker Dane Scarlett
scored the goals for the England side who play Euro qualifiers in
November.


Edwin Andersson played the final 14 minutes for Sweden Under-19s in a 2-2
draw with Republic of Ireland last week, before remaining an unused
substitute in a 1-1 draw with the same opponents yesterday.
