Eight Blues were involved in international friendlies on Wednesday
evening, with Olivier Giroud grabbing the headlines on a night of personal
milestones in the French capital...

Olivier Giroud was the toast of Paris and, in fact, the whole of France as
the striker hit two goals on his 100th international appearance to move
outright second in the all-time goalscoring charts for Les Bleus.


The 34-year-old led the world champions out as captain in Paris and did
not shirk his responsibilities as the man of the moment as he joined an
exclusive club of French footballing centurions.


Rennes teenage midfielder Eduardo Camavinga, a possible Champions League
opponent at club level next month, had already opened the scoring by the
time Giroud joined Michel Platini on 41 goals for France and it was a
fittingly special strike to mark the landmark moment.

Picking the ball up 25 yards from goal, the forward took two touches to
control and set the ball in position and then curled a thundering strike
into the top corner with that trusty powerhouse left foot.


The moment that took him past Platini in the scoring stakes and to within
nine of record goalscorer Thierry Henry was also typical Giroud. Lurking
on the shoulder of the last defender, he was quickest to react when the
goalkeeper parried a fierce strike from Houssem Aouar and crouched low to
nod a stooping header into the back of the unguarded net.


An own goal before the break gave the hosts a 4-0 half-time lead although
Ukraine, managed by former Chelsea striker Andriy Shevchenko, did at least
reduce the deficit in the second period at the Stade de France before
three goals in the final 25 minutes gave Didier Deschamps's men a big 7-1
victory. N'Golo Kante did not feature from the bench.


A special night then for Giroud as he moves into the pantheon of Gallic
greats – only seven men have more French caps than him and just one has
more goals – although how much he deserved the acclaim of 80,000
appreciative Parisians as he left the field with 15 minutes to play.

In Cologne, Kai Havertz took his strong start to the season at club level
onto the international stage, setting up two goals in Germany's 3-3 draw
with Turkey on just his eighth appearance for the national team.


The 21-year-old provided a defence-splitting forward pass from the right
for Julian Draxler to open the scoring on the stroke of half-time, before
demonstrating mesmerising quick feet on the edge of the box to set up the
second for Florian Neuhaus.


Turkey conjured an equaliser on both occasions and then again to snatch a
draw four minutes into added time after Benfica's Luca Waldschmidt had
seemingly won the contest late on. Havertz was replaced in the closing
stages, while Toni Rudiger played the opening hour. Timo Werner missed out
with a slight cold.

Kepa Arrizabalaga kept a clean sheet on his return to the starting side
for Spain as they drew 0-0 with Portugal. La Roja dominated possession in
Lisbon but it was the hosts who came closest to breaking the deadlock with
two efforts against the crossbar from Cristiano Ronaldo and Renato Sanches.


Although Jorginho remained an unused substitute, Emerson Palmieri was
involved in Italy's big win over Moldova. The full-back was introduced
after 66 minutes with the Azzurri already five goals ahead after a rampant
first half in Florence. The final score was 6-0.


In St Gallen, Mateo Kovacic played an hour as Croatia came from behind to
beat Switzerland 2-1 with goals from Wolfsburg forward Josip Brekalo and
former Blue Mario Pasalic, now at Atalanta. The World Cup runners-up have
Nations League encounters with Sweden and France up next.

Andreas Christensen came off the bench to help Denmark see out a
comfortable 4-0 victory over Faroe Islands. The defender replaced
Bournemouth's Philip Billing for the final 18 minutes and almost added a
fifth goal when his header was clawed away by the visiting goalkeeper. The
Danes are winless in their opening two Nations League group games and face
England at Wembley next week.


Earlier in the day, Callum Hudson-Odoi played the final 15 minutes of a
surprise 3-3 draw for England's Under-21s in Andorra as the young Lions
edged closer to qualification for next summer's European Championship at
that age group.


The 19-year-old entered proceedings with the score deadlocked at 2-2
following earlier goals from Everton's Tom Davies and Brentford's Josh
Dasilva. Despite fellow substitute Eddie Nketiah finding the back of the
net with just eight minutes remaining, England dropped two points with the
concession of another late equaliser.


Marc Guehi was an unused sub. Aidy Boothroyd's side can secure
qualification with a win over Turkey at Molineux on Tuesday.

Chelsea have a new England international in our squad following Reece
James's debut for the Three Lions at Wembley on Thursday night.

The 20-year-old was a late addition to Gareth Southgate's squad this week,
elevated from the Under-21s and the first time he had been called into the
senior party. He took a step further when he was introduced in the
58th-minute of a 3-0 win over Wales in a friendly.


No Chelsea players started the game for England but Mason Mount was
introduced at the same time as James. Ethan Ampadu, currently on loan at
Sheffield United, began the match for Wales.


In the first half, England went 1-0 up on 26 minutes through a close-range
header from Everton's in-form striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin on his debut,
from a cross by Aston Villa's Jack Grealish, but they had been largely
matched by the Welsh. Ampadu, playing in midfield, was tidy in possession
before the break and brought the ball forward from deep on occasions but
his game became more difficult when England upped theirs after the
interval.

Early in the second half, another goal was scored from inside the six-yard
box to put the home side 2-0 up, Wolves defender Conor Coady getting his
boot to a Kieran Trippier free-kick with the visitors' marking again in
question.


Wales hit the post from an offside run by Rabbi Matondo and Ampadu picked
up a booking for a foul on Grealish shortly before he was withdrawn by
Ryan Giggs, and just before the two Chelsea players were introduced by
England.


Southampton striker Danny Ings scored the Three Lions' third on 63 minutes
with an overhead kick from corner headed back his way.

England continued to press forward with Mount busy. From his pass, another
debutant, Arsenal full-back Bukayo Saka had a deflected shot saved, as
were late efforts from Ings and substitute James Ward-Prowse. Reece James
saw his fair share of the ball as he pressed forward down the right.


England now play two UEFA Nations League games at Wembley, against Belgium
on Sunday and Denmark on Wednesday.


In another friendly international on Thursday evening, Michy Batshuayi
looked to have scored the winner in a home match against Ivory Coast, only
for the African nation to make it 1-1 from the penalty spot with three
minutes left on the clock.


The Chelsea striker, back on loan at Crystal Palace, started the match and
was quick to react to turn the ball in after the keeper had saved his
initial volley from a cross on 53 minutes. Batshuayi has now netted seven
goals in his past five starts for his nation.

He had been replaced by Christian Benteke by the time AC Milan's Franck
Kessie equalised. As well as playing England, Belgium as take on Iceland
during this international break.


Earlier in the day, England Under-19s began a match against Scotland at
St. George's Park but it was abandoned in the first half as a precaution
in line with COVID protocol. Dynel Simeu, Levi Colwill and Lewis Bate are
in the England squad.

Chelsea players were in action on two continents during the latest round
of Nations League fixtures in Europe and the second matches of World Cup
qualifying in South America.

Reece James made the first start of his fledgling international career and
it turned out to be an eventful one. Both he and Mason Mount can consider
themselves unlucky to have been on the losing side, having been two of the
best players on the pitch as the Three Lions were defeated 1-0 at Wembley
by Andreas Christensen's Denmark.


James twice forced saves from goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, first with a
left-footed shot from the edge of the box after cutting in from the right,
and the second from a powerful free-kick. The damage had already been done
in the first half, though, when England were reduced to 10 men by Harry
Maguire's red card shortly before conceding from a penalty.


It was Mount who went closest to getting an equaliser for England, which
would have been his third international goal on his 10th appearance for
the Three Lions. His header, after close friend and former Chelsea Academy
team-mate Declan Rice had sent a set-piece back across goal, looked
destined for the net before Schmeichel clawed it away.

Mount was then withdrawn with just over 15 minutes remaining as England
continued to chase an equaliser, but the Three Lions were unable to find
the goal they needed for a point at Wembley. James' full debut was soured
slightly when he was shown a red card after the final whistle, as he
voiced his frustration to the referee as they left the pitch.


That meant a clean sheet for Christensen, who played the first half for

with local healthcare workers joining mayors from 240 other suffering
regions at the stadium.


On the pitch, an entertaining match in which both sides had chances,
finished 1-1 with both goals coming 10 minutes apart in the first half.

Olivier Giroud came on for Antoine Griezmann late on in France's 2-1 win
over Croatia. Griezmann had opened the scoring early on but Croatia
equalised in the second half, after Mateo Kovacic had come on at
half-time. After the French had again taken the lead, Kovacic was close to
getting a second equaliser, but his long-range shot was saved by Hugo
Lloris with five minutes left.


Ethan Ampadu, on loan at Sheffield United, helped Wales to a dramatic
victory away at Bulgaria. He played the whole game as the Welsh had to
stay patient, before getting the only goal of the game with five minutes
left.


In the early kick-off in Europe, English-born forward Armando Broja,
currently playing his club football on loan with Vitesse Arnhem, made his
second international start for Albania.


His first came three days earlier in a 0-0 draw with Kazakhstan and this
one away at Lithuania also ended goalless, despite Albania dominating the
game, with Broja playing the first hour.

Thiago Silva captains Brazil in Peru


Thiago Silva played the whole match as captain as Brazil negotiated the
often tricky tie away against Peru, in the early hours of Wednesday. That
made it two wins from two games in World Cup qualifying, putting them
above Argentina at the top of the table on goal difference.


However, it was far from simple for Thiago Silva and his international
team-mates in Lima, as they went behind early in the first half and again
in the second, fighting back to equalise on both occasions.


That set things up for a crazy finale, as Peru had two men sent off in the
last five minutes of normal time and Neymar scored two penalties, the
second four minutes into added time, to complete a hat-trick and give
Brazil a 4-2 victory.
