Chelsea Here Chelsea There: Broja and Kenedy score on landmark
appearances, dramatic comebacks for Lawrence and Anjorin
18 Oct 2021
In our weekly round-up of the action around the world involving the
Chelsea players out on loan, Armando Broja and Kenedy both made sure their
first league starts for their clubs would be memorable occasions, while
there was plenty of drama with some late comebacks elsewhere...

There was a day to remember for Armando Broja, as the young striker marked
his first start in the Premier League by scoring his first goal in that
competition, which earned Southampton their first league win of the
season.

The Albanian international described it as a 'dream come true' after
firing a neat finish into the roof of the net from Nathan Redmond's low
cross early in the second half of his side's tie with Leeds United at St
Mary's Stadium.

Broja looked a threat throughout, especially at corners, glancing one
header just wide and coming to close to setting up Mohamed Elyounoussi
with another, but his strike proved to be the only goal in a valuable 1-0
victory which Saints manager Ralph Hasenhuttl suggested was an important
step in the striker's continued development.
'He has something that you can use,' said Hasenhuttl after the game. 'He
can thread around the box and you also feel when he has the ball he is a
threat, he has the speed to go past a player and produce a shot.
'He had two other good scenes where he could score but I must say it was a
good performance. I think it's time for him to show from the beginning
that he can play 90 minutes well and today he worked hard.'
On the other side of the Atlantic, Kenedy was named in Flamengo's starting
line-up for the first time as they hosted Juventude in the Brazilian Serie
A last Wednesday. The winger wasted no time, as it took him just 12
minutes to register his first goal for the club and open the scoring in
their 3-1 win. He then came off the bench against Cuiaba on Sunday but
couldn't repeat the trick as they drew 0-0, but that result keeps Flamengo
second in the table.

Emerson Palmieri provided a late assist for Lyon to complete their 2-0
home win over Monaco in Ligue 1. Having taken the lead from the penalty
spot, the highlight of the game arrived in injury time as Emerson received
a brilliant no-look flick from Lucas Paqueta, and took full advantage of
the opening by driving a low cross into the six-yard box, where Jason
Denayer turned in to make the win safe.

Michy Batshuayi scored an injury-time penalty for Besiktas – his fourth
goal in his last five league appearances for the Turkish club – which
gave them brief hope but turned out to be merely a consolation as they
lost 3-2 away at Istanbul Basaksehir.

Back in England, Levi Colwill helped Huddersfield Town move into the
Championship play-off places with a 2-0 home win over Hull City, who had
fellow Chelsea loanee Nathan Baxter on their substitutes' bench. The
Terriers looked comfortable throughout as they made it four wins from
their last five home games.
Reading are just one point further behind after their 1-0 victory over
Barnsley. Baba Rahman and Danny Drinkwater both featured throughout as the
Royals earned their narrow win through former Chelsea midfielder John
Swift's eighth goal of the season. Another former Blues Academy player,
Barnsley goalkeeper Brad Collins, produced the best save of the game to
deny Baba a fine goal by keeping out his powerful long-range effort.

In League One, Henry Lawrence came off the bench as Wimbledon completed a
dramatic comeback from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Sheffield
Wednesday. The Dons had already pulled one goal back when Lawrence was
introduced with 15 minutes remaining, before they grabbed an equaliser in
the 84th minute.

Jamie Cumming and Gillingham suffered a home defeat to 10-man Sunderland,
having gone ahead from the penalty spot before conceding twice, either
side of half-time, to lose 2-1.
In the rest of the overseas action, Karlo Ziger helped Rudar Velenje
continue their good form by beating Brezice 4-1 at home, recording their
seventh win in nine league games to go within four points of the two
promotion spots.
Tino Anjorin came on for the last 20 minutes as Lokomotiv Moscow recovered
from going 2-0 down at Rubin Kazan to secure a 2-2 draw thanks to an
injury-time equaliser.
Thierno Ballo made his second start of the season for Rapid Vienna away at
Austria Klagenfurt as they took a first-half lead, but saw his team-mates
concede an 87th-minute equaliser after being substituted in the 1-1 draw.
