Devers has a sweet, buggy-whip swing from the left side, plus bat speed and a
knack for barreling the ball with authority, whether it’s in or out of the
strike zone. He uses a simple, compact stroke that stays in the hitting zone,
giving him excellent plate coverage and the ability to drive the ball to all
fields. His power output has improved since he signed, with plus raw power
that could tick up with natural strength progression.

Devers is an aggressive hitter who can get jumpy at times, but he’s at his
best when he keeps his weight back and lets his hands work. His pitch
recognition is solid for his age, though it’s still an area he’s working to
improve.

Mike (Virginia): Would you label Guerra as purely a defense-first SS? Could
you see him developing into a solid hitter or is his whole offensive package
still on the rough side?

Ben Badler: It won't be an impact bat, but the bat-to-ball skills are solid
and he's shown a more patient approach before this season, so the underlying
skills are there for him to be a steady hitter.

Mike (Virginia): What grade would you give Devers' power (both present and
future)?

Ben Badler: It's 60 raw power now. He's 17 and the bat speed is excellent, so
if he keeps getting bigger and stronger, I wouldn't be surprised if that
ticked up another grade.

Mike (Virginia): Were any Red Sox pitchers in consideration for the list,
specifically Jake Cosart and Michael Kopech?

Ben Badler: They didn't throw enough innings in the league to qualify for the
list, but Kopech was up to 98 mph and showed a chance to have three average
to plus pitches, although he's going to have to get his delivery under
control. Cosart hit 97 mph before the Red Sox shut him down to limit his
workload, although his secondary stuff is understandably still raw.

Chris (DC): Where do you see Chavis and Devers opening next year? The Sally
league seems like the obvious location, but it's tricky if they're both going
to play 3B primarily. And I would have thought that Dubon would start at
short in Greenville (where Chavis could also play), though maybe he's not
good enough to affect Chavis's placement.

Ben Badler: Their bats are both good enough for the South Atlantic League,
but you’re right, it’s not an easy answer. From what I’ve heard though,
the Red Sox haven’t ruled out shortstop yet for Chavis, at least in the
short term, and there has been some talk internally about seeing how he might
look at second base. So there are a few ways to juggle those guys, plus you
have the DH, and giving Devers some occasional reps at first base (although I
haven’t heard this discussed, to be clear) wouldn’t be a terrible idea
either to get him some exposure and keep his bat in the lineup. But these are
very, very good problems for a farm director to have.
